These are some of the fish that can be caught by trolling in Maltese waters.

The most frequent fish caught by trolling are Blue Fin Tuna, Swordfish, White Marlin, Albacore, Atlantic Bonito, Little Tunny and occasionally Yellow Fin Tuna.

Albacore Albacore

Season for Albacore is from mid June to mid July. Recently this species has become much more frequently caught. Large squid lures are used and trolling at 6/8 knots is neccesary. They are mostly caught to the south of Malta. One has to reach very deep water which is about 10 miles and over from the shore.

Atlantic Bonito Atlantic Bonito

Atlantic Bonito is another favourite and frequent trolling species. These are caught further inland and can be caught usuing coloured feathers and spoons during the winter season. In cold weather the lures have to be trolled about 4 metres below the surface usuing either a downrigger or weights on the line.

Swordfish
Occasionally when trolling for Dorado (Dolphin Fish) we also catch Swordfish. These are attracted by almost all types of lures but the favourites are the Rapala CD series. When a swordfish attacks the lure the drag on the reel will start to come out and stop. At that moment the fish is striking the lure to try and kill the prey. One has to be very attentive and at that moment release some line and the swordfish swallows the lure.
